Joomla Installation

Get a FREE Joomla installation with SiteGround Joomla hosting Package!
There are two ways to install Joomla on a SiteGround hosting account. The easier and preferred method is an automated installation with Fantastico. Not only will it set all permissions and configuration options correctly, but you will be able to automatically upgrade Joomla to new versions as they became available. An upgrade is often more complicated than the installation itself, so this is a big relief.
A manual installation is for those who want to have all power in their hands. If you feel comfortable with FTP, and have basic understanding of file permissions, databases and web technologies as a whole, go for this method.

How to install Joomla CMS with Fantastico

In order to install Joomla CMS with Fantastico, please log into your cPanel and click on the blue smiley icon (Image: ‘fantastico2’) at the bottom of the front page.
Please, select ‘Joomla’ from the menu list on the left-hand side and click on "New Installation".

You will be presented with a form that asks for the most essential pieces of information about your future Joomla website.

Form explanation:
Install in Directory - this determines the address where your Joomla installation will be accessible at. If you want to use Joomla for your home page, just leave this field blank.
Admin access data - the username and password for accessing the administration panel of your Joomla installation. Please make a note of the username and pass or otherwise you won't be able to manage your website.
Base Configuration Admin e-mail - your e-mail address
Admin full name - your full name
Site Name - the name of your website that will be displayed on the front page.
Once you have filled in the form, please proceed by clicking on the "Install Joomla" button. You will be asked to confirm the installation on the next page. Finally, you get a page that informs you of a successful installation. You should bookmark the address of the administrator panel (yourdomain.com/administrator), and note your login credentials. Now, you are ready to log in and start building your website!

How to install Joomla CMS manually
Get a FREE Joomla installation with SiteGround Joomla hosting Package!
Please, follow these instructions in order to complete a manual installation of Joomla on a SiteGround hosting account. Please, skip this step if you already completed the automated installation.
Pre-installation Steps
Database Setup
Please, log into your cPanel and click on MySQL Databases. Look for the “Add DB” button:

Here you create the MySQL database that will be used by your Joomla instalation for storing all articles, news, comments, polls and results, and almost everything else that Joomla needs to remember. Pick a simple name for the database (e.g. ‘Joomla’), fill it in and click on the “Add DB” button.
Now that you have created the database, you also need to make sure that Joomla will be able to access it. You need to create a MySQL user that has privileges for accessing the database.
Again, go to cPanel -> MySQL Databases and find the “Add User” button. Right above it, fill in a username and password for the MySQL user. It is a good idea to keep the username the same as the name of the database. Ready? Take a note of the password and username you selected and click on the “Add User” button.

At this point, the only thing left to do about database setup is to grant privileges to the user for the database. On the cPanel -> MySQL Databases page, find the two drop-down menus for users and databases, select your Joomla database and the user you have created leave the Privileges: þALL checked and click on “Add User to Db”.
Upload Files
Now that you have your database up and ready to be filled in with data, you have to upload the Joomla files to your account. Go to www.joomla.org and download the latest release. Extract it on your computer – the archive will unzip to a folder that contains the files of the installation.
Now, please, fire up your favorite FTP client.
You should have already picked where Joomla will be installed on your account. If you need it to be your main website engine, you should upload the files and directories of the installation directly inside the public_html directory of your account. In other words, if Joomla is to be visible at http://www.YourDomain.com/
The files should be uploaded inside public_html, and should have FTP paths like
public_html/index.php
public_html/installation/
public_html/components/
etc.
If you want Joomla installed in a sub-directory, create a directory inside public_html and upload all files there. For example, if Joomla is to be installed at http://www.yourdomain.com/joomlasite/, please, create the public_html/joomlasite directory and upload the files in there, which should produce similar paths:
public_html/joomlasite/index.php
public_html/joomlasite/components/
etc.
Have a cup of coffee or tea while the files are being uploaded. :)
Installation
Finally, you are ready to proceed with the installation. Please, point your browser to the URL where you have uploaded the files. We will assume Joomla will be your main website, so type www.yourdomain.com in your browser. The steps of the installation process are very straight forward and well-explained, so we will only discuss the most important ones in detail.
Pre-installation Check – you may get a warning about Register Globals being on – do not worry, as this should not be a problem later on. Proceed by clicking on “Next”.
License – Joomla is licensed under GPL. Review the licensing conditions and quit reading this tutorial if you disagree with any of them. No? Ok, click on “Next”
Step 1: MySQL database configuration: This is where you tell Joomla how to access its database. Some time ago, you should have created an MySQL database and user – please enter the details in the boxes provided. Note, that the name of the database and the username are prefixed with “username_” where username is your cPanel login name. Do not forget to type in the password of the MySQL user, note that it is case-sensitive. For “Host Name” enter “localhost”. All other check-boxes and fields can be left by default. Click on Next – a popup will appear, asking you to confirm that the information you entered is correct. Worry not – if you made a mistake, the installation will take you back to this step. Click OK.
Step 2: Site Name: Enter the name of your website, for example “A Joomla Playground” or “My Personal Website”.
Step 3: This is an important part of the installation, where you are asked to confirm the URL and system path to the files. Do not edit those values, unless you know what you are doing. Put your e-mail in the “Your e-mail” filed. This will not bring tons of SPAM in your inbox, actually, the e-mail address will not be displayed anywhere on the website. However, it is vital that you enter an actual e-mail address, as it will be used to send your password in case you forgot it, and notify you of other events. Enter your administrator password in the Admin Password” field. Please leave the File and Directory permissions settings intact. It is save to choose “Don't CHMOD” for both.
Step 4: Yuppee! Your Joomla is now almost up and running. Note your administrator username and password – this is very important. Before you can access the installation, you have to delete a directory called “installation” that sits inside the Joomla directory. This can be done using either an FTP client or cPanel's File Manager. Once the directory is completely removed, Joomla is ready for you to play with. Congratulations!
If you have created your Joomla site locally on your computer
If you are building your Joomla site locally and need to upload it on your hosting account, please, follow the instructions above for the installation of the Joomla system. Please, check the How to export your Joomla database article from the Joomla backup section in order to find out how to upload your Joomla database on your hosting account.

Joomla Templates
SiteGround web hosting provider has released great-looking Joomla templates for personal and business sites, which you can download and use FREE of charge!
How to install and change Joomla Templates?
Get FREE installation of Joomla templates with SiteGround Joomla hosting Package!
Installing a template on Joomla is an easy task. The first thing you have to do is find the template of your choice and download it. SiteGround FREE Joomla Templates Gallery is a great place to look at. The template file is a zip archive (a.k.a. package file) containing everything needed for its installation. To install it, please, log in to your Joomla administrator panel and go to Installers -> Templates – Site.

Click on the “Browse...” button for a package file installation, select the .zip file of the template you downloaded and click on “Upload file & Install”

The upload should complete in few seconds. Ready? Click on “Continiue...”

You are now taken to the Template Manager section of the Joomla administration panel. To make the template you have just installed, show on your pages, please select the radio button just in front of its name and click on the “Default” button, at the top bar of the page.

Your site now uses the newly installed template. Go to your site and enjoy it :)

How to install additional languages to Joomla?
When you enter the administration panel, you will first see the index page with all management options.

If you are willing to add a new language pack to your Joomla installation, please, visit the Joomla Extentions - Languages page and download the language pack you would like to use. Then, please, go to the Installers menu and select Languages.

Press the Browse button to locate the installation pack for the language...

...and then select the Upload File & Install.

Wait for the confirmation and press the Continue button. From the listed languages select the new one and then click the Publish icon.

Well done! You have successfully installed a new language pack on your Joomla system!

Joomla Administration
Now we can proceed to tuning your Joomla, including changing the default language. Please visit Site > Global Configuration.

You can make your website invisible while it is still in development, change the offline message and edit the name of the website, change the default HTML editor and the number of items in each list in the first Site tab of the configuration.
In the Locale tab you can select the language and the time zone that the site will display. The language can be picked up amongst the ones you have already installed and published.

In the Content tab you can choose whether to display the printer-friendly version link in your content. For those of the options that sound unfamiliar to you, additional information can be obtained when hovering with the mouse pointer over the blue 'i' circle at the end of each row.
If you are willing to change the database setting, you can do this in the Database tab. The server, database name, user and password can be edited from that tab.
We do not recommend changing the default Server tab settings. We especially do NOT recommend the GZIP Page Compression option to be turned On, because if your provider is using a transparent proxy this option may cause slow access times and prevent you from viewing your updates.

Joomla Administration - Meta data, Mail, Statistics
The Metadata tab allows you to add meta description for your website as well as keywords - this information will allow search engines to easily index your website in their search results. Please, make sure to add meta information relevant to the content of your webpage.
The Mail tab contains settings for Joomla mass mailing function - that allows you to send messages to all your users. The default settings here are correct and tested with the Joomla installation on SiteGround servers - the only thing you might change here is the sender's e-mail address.
Changing the settings in the Cache tab can lead to security issues with user accounts (especially on publicly accessible computers) and are not recommendable.
The Statistics tab has three options. The website would mostly benefit from turning on the first "Statistics" line to "Yes" only, since the other two will collect large amounts of data that is not very useful and may slow down your website.

Joomla Modules, Components and Joomlats
How to install Search engine friendly urls module to Joomla?
Using Search engine friendly URL's in your Joomla system will let you gain higher positions in Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc. In order to install Search Engine Optmization module in Joomla you have to:
1. Navigate to: Site => Global Configuration => SEO. Then change 'Search Engine Friendly URLs:' to be Yes. It has to look like:

then save the settings:

2. Now, navigate to the folder on your account where Joomla is installed by using an FTP client (More information about installing, configuring and using an FTP client here.) And rename the file 'htaccess.txt' to .htaccess.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Search Engine Optmization module in Joomla!

How to manage banner ads from Joomla?
Joomla allows you to easily remove or change the banner ads that are part of the default installation, or add and manage new ones. That can be done through the Components menu - Manage Banners tab and from the expended menu select Manage banners.

How to remove banner ads?
In the banner list check the boxes in front of the two default banners and then click the Unpublish or the Delete icon at the top right...

That's it :-)
How to add banner ads?
In order to add a new banner, please click the "New" button and fill in the required info. Please, use the "Upload" button to add new banner image.
How to manage clients?
You can also add or remove clients from the Components menu - Manage Clients tab, just below the Manage Banners one.

How to start managing your website content with Joomla?
Now it is time to add some content to your website! In order to create the desired hierarchy, you need first to gain understanding of the classes of content that are included in Joomla. Those are sections, categories and content items.
The highest level in the hierarchy is represented by the sections. These can be managed through the Section Manager of the Content menu. Imagine the sections as the drawers in a cupboard that contain the folders (categories), filled with articles (content items). If you are having a Joomla website about cars, you will have the sections 'Ford', 'Chevy' and 'Dodge'. The 'Ford' section will have categories 'Mustang', 'Thunderbird' and 'Taurus'. The 'Mustang' category will have content items 'V6GT', 'Steeda Q' and 'Shelby Cobra GT500'. The entire structure is much like a tree:

Let us first start with creating a section. To do that, please go to the Content menu and select the Section Manager option.

Once in there, you will see the list of existing sections. Click the New icon in order to create your own section.

In the fields that appear, fill in the details of the section: title, description, etc.

When done, please click the Save icon at the top right and you will be taken back to the section list, which will now include the section you have just created. In order to link it to a menu you will need to click on its name and edit the linking properties (those preferences determine where in the menus should the section appear in the menus of your website).

How to manage Joomla Categories?
Next step in organizing the content in your website is creating the categories. To do that you need to go to the Category manager through the Content menu:

There you will be able to see the existing categories, edit and manage those and create new ones.

Click on the New icon to start the creation process and fill in the details required for the new category.

It is important to select the parent section for the new category, in order to have the proper content organization (or at least the one that you desire). Again, you can set the menu linking details after the category being saved.

Please note that an empty section or an empty category will not show up in the menu. Each of these must have at least a single content item created and published.

How to manage Joomla content items?
In order to create and publish a Content Item, please go to the Content menu and select All Content Items.

All the items that have been included in Joomla article list to date will be displayed. You will be able to either edit and manage the existing ones, or create new ones by clicking the respective icon:

The process of creating a new article is very similar to the one through which the sections and the categories are being created. This time around you will need to select both the parenting section and category, in order to build the last level of the hierarchy.

This time around, instead of description you will be able to enter a short introductory text, that will appear in the main section or category page, or at the starting page of your website in case you publish the item to the front page of your Joomla. Again, you will be able to determine where does the item appear in menus, add pictures, manage authorship and publishing date, etc. When done, click the Save icon to complete the creation process. You will be able to see the new item listed in the Content manager.

The last thing to go in order to have the item online is to publish it - just click on the red X and that will publish the article.
You can also change the order in which the articles appear through clicking the up- and down-pointed triangles respectively. That can also be done through changing the number in the Order box that you see on the same line and then pressing the Enter key on your keyboard: the smaller the number in the box, the higher the article appears. The changes will automatically be applied and you will see the changes when the screen refreshes.
How to use Joomla Media Manager?
In order to fully utilize the multimedia capabilities of Joomla, you can start using the Media Manager utility. You can find that in the Site menu. When you click it, a listing of the items will appear: both folders and separate images will be displayed. In order to select which folder you will be uploading to, you can use the Directory dropdown menu.

Under the file and folder list, you will be able to see three input boxes:

Upload allows you to select file and upload it to the image library (using the Browse button and then clicking the Upload icon in the top right corner).

The Code box displays the HTML code that allows you to link to the image from the library you have clicked on.

Through the Create Directory box you can create a new folder to which you are able to upload files. Type in the name of the directory and then click the Create icon at the top right corner menu.

In order to be able to upload to a certain directory, please click the folder image, under which the specific name appears:

the page will be refreshed and you will be able to upload directly to the respective folder.
If you are willing to delete a file or an empty folder, you can click the trash-can image below the item you wish to delete. You will be prompted to confirm deletion.

Please note that in case the directory you are trying to delete is not empty you will be unable to remove it.

How to use Joomla Polls?
When installed, Joomla includes a poll. The Poll manager is what allows you to create, edit and remove polls from your website. Results are being automatically calculated and displayed on a separate page.
In order to manage your polls, you need to reach the Poll manager You can do that by clicking on the Polls link in the Components menu:

You will be taken to a page, where at your first visit you will see a single poll: the one that comes by default with the Joomla installation.

Clicking on the poll name will allow you to edit the questions and answers. You can replace those with your own, then save the survey.

In case you are unwilling to have a poll on your website (at least for now) you can un-publish that by selecting the respective survey and click the respective icon.

The poll will be immediately removed from the website, but will not be deleted. Thus you can take it back any time you want. To permanently remove a poll from your Joomla, please use the Delete icon.
Joomla Components: Joomla and Virtuemart
How to install Virtuemart component on your Joomla website
To install VirtueMart on an existing Joomla website, you need to install Virtuemart component and module. The installation steps are very easy, and are described in great detail in the documentation of the VirtueMart package itself.
First of all, please, go to www.virtuemart.net and download the complete package of the shopping cart, called VirtueMart_x.x_COMPLETE_PACKAGE.zip. Please, extract this file on your local hard drive, to find the actual components and modules. Now, go to your Joomla Administrator panel and navigate to Installers -> Components

The first thing to be installed is the com_virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz file. Click on the “Browse...” button, select the file and hit “Upload File & Install”

The installation of the core element of VirtueMart is now complete

Now, a module has to be installed, to make the functionality of VirtueMart accessible on your site. The procedure is very similar to installing the component: please, go to Installers -> Modules, browse for the file called mod_virtuemart.x.x.tar.gz and click on “Upload File & install”.
Congratulations! You are now ready to use VirtueMart on your Joomla site! In Joomla Administrator, go to Components -> VirtueMart and click on the “Go directly to Store” button. Be sure not to interrupt this step – it may take a while as some time consuming SQL queries have to be executed. Please be sure to check the official installation instructions, included in installation.pdf – a file in the complete package file. There are additional modules and mambots that can enhance the performance and features of your website. These are very well covered in the documentation as well, and are also contained in the complete package archive you downloaded.
Joomla Components: Joomla and SMF Forum
How to install SMF Forum component on your Joomla website
There is a number of Joomla-SMF integration solutions, most of them are continued Mambo-SMF integration efforts. The one we will cover here is Cowboy's Joomla-SMF Forum component. The official page, along with installation instructions and documentation can be found here:
http://www.joomlahacks.com/joomla/components/Joomla-SMF_Forum/
To use this solution, you need your SMF forum to be installed on the same database that Joomla is installed on. So, first of all, check the configuration.php file of your Joomla installation for the following variables:
$mosConfig_user
$mosConfig_password
$mosConfig_db
These are the MySQL username, password and database name of the Joomla installation. Now that you have these details, you can install SMF manually on the same database.
Once the forum is installed, please follow this link to download the component. Extract the .zip file on your hard drive, and go to the Installers -> Components section of Joomla Administrator

Please, browse for the com_joomla_smf_forum_x.x.zip file, contained in the archive and complete the installation:

All that is left now, is to configure the Joomla-SMF component.
Go to Components -> Joomla SMF Forum -> Configuration

This is the most important step of the integration, and is essential that you complete all fields correctly:

Joomla-SMF configuration details:
SMF Absolute Path – the path where you installed SMF. You can use the path to the Joomla installation as reference.
SMF Database Prefix – the default prefix is “smf_”, and you should probably use this one, unless you used a different prefix when installing SMF.
Fill in the above two and click on the “Save” button. Fix the errors, if any, and proceed by clicking on the “click to patch” links for the index files of Joomla and SMF. Clicking on the Save button after each change will help you avoid errors, and make it easier to revert wrong actions. After you have completed all steps successfully, the SMF forum should work fine in your Joomla-based website. There are additional modules that can enhance the performance of the SMF integration. Please check this link for download links and installation instructions

Joomla Components: Joomla and Joomlaboard
How to install Joomlaboard component on your Joomla website
If you need a forum and you do not have a free SQL database, Simpleboard/Joomlaboard is the forum for you. Set up takes about 10 minutes including the category setup.
The board has smilies, thread subscriptions, and most standard forum features.
There is the ability to save threads/boards as a pdf which is good if you really want to save your board.
Ranking is available but only at 6 levels. You can adjust the names of the Rankings and the Postings required to achieve a higher ranking but you can not add more ranks.
The non-existance of Polling is really all the board is really lacking.
Private messages are provided in a 3rd Party Plugin called myPMSII.
Quick reply is not native to SimpleBoard but there are code hacks available in the Component web site to add it.
Great integration with Community Builder including Avatars and User Profiles.
Download Joomlaboard here
Here is the installation of Joomlaboard in 6 simple steps:
Step 1. Download Joomlaboard component
Step 2. Log into your Joomla site's admin, go to "installers/component"
Step 3. Browse to downloaded zip, hit the button to upload and install
Step 4. Components menu, select Joomlaboard / configuration => change settings as desired (title, mail etc.).
Step 5. In forum manager, add at least one first forum, and then a second one with this as parent.
the 1st (parent) one is like a section in joomla: you can't post in there.
the 2nd (child) forum acts as a category: this is where your content (posts/threads) will go.
Step 6. You are done! You can now test your Joomlaboard.

"We've detected that your server returns a status of 200 (found successfully) for pages that don't exist. We can't verify sites with this configuration because it would enable anyone to verify ownership of your site."
Please, follow the instructions below:
1. You can try out the "meta tag" verification method. You may want to check the following URL for more information: How do I verify my site by adding a meta tag to my site's home page?

Troubleshooting Tips: Please note that this issue could be also caused if you try to registrar one website for few different domain/subdomain names. Please make sure that this is not the reason that caused this issue.
You may also check the following URL for more details information about Google: We've detected that your server returns a status of 200 (found successfully) for pages that don't exist.
In case you use Search Engine Friendly URLs, the problem might be caused by the following:
1. A rewrite rule that is rewriting the URLs for 404 pages.
Solution: Please, move (rename) your .htaccess file for a second and try to verify your site with the file method again. Then return (change) .htaccess back to its normal state.
2. A custom 404 page which using the apache software error pages is actually displayed with 200 OK status.
